The “One for the Road” blanket – FREE PATTERN INSIDE

So here is the thing… I did not keep the blog super updated all the time. In fact I think blogging is kind of annoying and I know that most of you people are not here to read about my personal stories. You are here to get a free pattern, right?

So I will just give you the hard facts:

I crocheted this diamond a year ago. It is highly inspired by a knitter who is called “SOCKMATICIAN“.Who is a fantastic designer. He did approve that I am allowed to write this crochet pattern. Thank you a thousand times for that. Visit his homepage and follow him on every social media out there. It is sooo worth it.

I thought it was about time to use the diamond in a blanket pattern and I  wanted to make this blanket really big. So I used a 5.00mm hook. And I wanted to try to mix different yarn. I decided to go with Scheepjes Stone Washed XL and my beloved Scheepjes Cahlista.

The colours I wanted to use this time are:

Cahlista: Old Lace / 130, Stone Washed Xl: Lemon Quartz /852

As a father of to girls (2 and 5 years old) you better train your children well in social skills  to avoid fights or you may be forced to crochet everything twice. Otherwise they will fight about every item… (“It´s mine… no it´s mine… I had that first… No, i had it” Parents know what I am talking about.)

It doesn´t mean that I gave up, but right now it feels much easier to crochet a second full size blanket than to repeat (on and on again) for my girls how important it is to share.

So I made a second blanket in Scheepjes Cahlista only:

Cahlista Rust/ 383 and Cahlista Baby Blue 509

In the Cahlista version you will need 24 balls of yarn A and 22 balls of yarn B. I did add an extra round of scs in yarn A at the border.

  4. OM GOD, you are so awesome. I bought a bunch of Stonewashed XL for a pattern I never made and I’m hoping I have enough…. This is SO COOL. Squeal! (I wanted to say Squee but I’m 61 so I’d better not)

    1. Pattern is adjustable.. for the full size pattern 195cm x 135cm you will need about 50 balls… i know that it is a lot… 🙈

  10. What an amazing pattern, no wonder your girls were fighting over those blankets. I don’t make much time for reading blogs but when I like yours and a few others. Also, I quite like a personal blog, or when a bit of your personal life or life experience is in with your free patterns, it’s always nice to know a bit about the creator. But then I love it when people tell me about themselves and their lives. Once again, loving this pattern. Thank you.

  19. I noticed the yarn is 70% cotton and 30% acrylic. Does this wash well without shrinking and have you tried other yarns? Your work is beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

  21. Hello! I love this pattern and am working on a “test” version of it with scrap yarn before picking out “real” yarn for it. Does the reverse side look the same with the diamond pattern? I’m only on row 6, but it seems like the reverse side of the blanket will only be stripes. Is that right? or am I reading the pattern wrong?

      2. Hello again! It’s been almost a year and I’m just finishing up my blanket. But I’m a little confused on the edging. I’ve never made a blanket according to a real pattern before, so I’m trying to figure out why it’s 5 SC then skip a stitch. Why not just SC all down the edge?

      3. Hi, One stitch takes more space in length than in height. If you do 1sc in every row, the edge will get wavy. 😊

    1. In both… there is another technique where you work with sc in BLO (instead of chains) and dc in FLO. But i prefer the chains/dc (in whole stitch) version

  23. You do amazing work. I learned crochet from my mom who learned from her mom, you can say it’s a family tradition. I’ve been crocheting since I was a little girl, and yet I’ve never seen anything like what you do. What an awesome way to showcase crochet, it’s totally different. I love it. And thank you for sharing, it must have taken hours to do what you do, and to share it with the rest of us is a very selfless thing to do. I appreciate it. 🙂

  26. Thank you so much for this pattern. I had some trouble at first, but after I re-read the notes it all started to click.
    I was looking for something special for my youngest son and when I saw this I was so excited to get started. My son has decided to donate a kidney to his father and I wanted to make him a blanket to recoup under.

  30. Hello sir, I have a question in this pattern. I started this pattern last night so when the numbers didn’t add up I thought in was just sleepy and would try again in the morning. Here is what I did and retried the next day but still didn’t work out as the pattern says: I chained 194 for the first row then 193 single crochet (American terms) in the second row. At this point all is well. Although I followed step by step at the end of the third row at the end of the last repeat I only could put 14 single crochet and not the 17 plus 2. Is this an error on my end or is there a typo in the printed pattern?

  34. I love the pattern “One for the Road” so much. However, I have been unable to get past row 5. I have made several of Tinna’s blankets but this has me crazy! Do you have a tutorial or a video? That would be great and I would be willing to pay to have either one. Thank you.

  35. I am having trouble getting started, my first mosaic. I did the 194 single crochet rows now on the first chain rows. 19 sc first then 18 then 17… I end with 9sc… 9/18 chain spaces 176sc, what am I doing wrong?

  36. I just discover this pattern while looking for a blanket to make for my husband (and I just started it tonight.) I was especially excited when I finally realized it was from a male crocheter. My dad also knit and crocheted his entire life, from the time he was about 5 years old. He taught me how at 5 also, and I taught my kids. I love seeing male practitioners; it makes a huge connection for me and memories of my dad with yarn (he mostly made shawls) come flooding back. Thank you! I will be checking back here often.

    1. I have don’t this pattern in a baby blanket twice. I used block 1, 2, and ended on block one. I chained 117 and started from there. The pattern ended up 3 full diamonds for the first block 1 full diamond and 2 half diamonds in the second and again 3 full diamonds in the 3rd. They both came out perfect.

  38. This is beautiful. Intricate and complex. Truly gorgeous. I am a newbie self taught middle aged man and this will be a great challenge in these strange times. Have made a swatch and now cannot wait to start on the full project. Thank you for your generosity.
